VAT FAQs

Common questions about VAT in South Africa

You must register for VAT (compulsory registration) if your taxable supplies exceed R1 million in any consecutive 12-month period. Voluntary registration is available if your taxable supplies exceed R50,000. Once registered, you must comply with the Value Added Tax Act 89 of 1991 and submit VAT returns on your allocated cycle.

Most VAT vendors in South Africa submit VAT201 returns every two months (bi-monthly). If your annual turnover exceeds R30 million, you may apply to submit monthly. VAT returns and payment are due by the 25th of the month following the end of your VAT period. Late submissions attract penalties and interest from SARS.

The standard VAT rate in South Africa is 15%. Certain basic foodstuffs and other specified items are zero-rated (0%) or exempt from VAT. As a VAT vendor, you charge VAT on your taxable supplies and can claim input tax on business expenses. Procon ensures all your VAT transactions are correctly classified and reported.
